The Biafran or Nigerian Civil War started in July 6th 1967 and ended in January 15th 1979. The war started as both an ethnic and political conflict. It was escalated as the result of the southern region of Nigeria seeking for self secession. In his brief address exactly on the 6th of July, 2004, the former governor of central bank of Nigeria Prof. Charles Soludo said that the banking system in Nigeria was very fragile and unstable  hence with his vision of making the banking and financial sector in Nigeria to achieve a reliable and a global standard that depositors can have absolute trust upon with local and foreign investors strongly relying upon, he announced the reform of N25bilion shareholders Re-capitalization of the Nigerian banks and fixed 31st December, 2005 as the deadline which saw just 25 out of the then existing 89 banks meeting the target.

The announcement of the bank consolidation exercise sent jitters into the spine of many commercial banks then operating within the Nigeria territory. This exercise paved ways to banks who could not meet the stipulated N25billion target to either merged or become acquired by other bigger banks. This effort by the then CBN governor is still one recommendable effort that has been praised by both the local and international community that lead to massive reformation in the Nigerian banking sector both in terms of policy, customers and banking operations.

President Goodluck Jonathan recently made some changes to his cabinet. The former minister of power Prof. Bath Nnaji willfully resigned paving the way for the president to nominate a former vice chancellor of one of the Nigerian University Prof. Chinedu Nebo to take over as a minister of the most dreaded power sector. Highlight below are the list of the current ministers updated as at 6/1/2013. The process of nominating ministers in a large country like Nigeria in a rigorous one.

Each state of the federation sends a nominee by its governor to the presidency a name of carefully selected candidates for consideration. The president forwards the names of such candidate to the senate for screening and confirmation. The process of screening in the senate is rigorous one that sees each ministerial nominee undergoing a tough session of questions and answers.

Only the senate is vested with the power to carry out the ministerial screening processes.  If a nominee is successfully screened in the senate, he or she immediately assumes duty as a substantive minister of the federal republic of Nigeria. The basic role of a minister is to oversee the operations and functionality of its various ministries. The minister is deputized by the various permanent secretaries of each ministry.
