The Biafran or Nigerian Civil War started in July 6th 1967 and ended in January 15th 1979. The war started as both an ethnic and political conflict. It was escalated as the result of the southern region of Nigeria seeking for self secession. The ethnic angle to the war was as the result of huge cultural, religious and economic tension that exists between the ibos and the hausa of southeastern and northern Nigeria respectively. The Nigerian war lasted for about 1 and half years and saw over one million people died from the crisis. The major tool used during the war to cause millions of death was starvation resulting from the blockage of food supply to the besieged area during the civil war. This resulted to genocide mainly on the ibo tribe of the eastern region of Nigeria. We pray that this kind of war
will never surface again in our dear country. We are still indebted to Major General Effiong who brokered the peace deal between the Nigerian government soldiers and the Biafran soldiers.
